The Barbershop Scene
This scene, from Senaryo Okulu's Workshop Film, was written to show the techniques you've learned.
Scene
INT. BARBERSHOP - DAY
A small, old shop. A yellowed Beşiktaş poster on the
wall. A crackly folk song on the radio.
ALİ (40s, bony face) wipes his scissors on his work
apron. Once. Once more.
In the chair sits the BIG MAN (50s). A white cloth
around his neck. He watches Ali in the mirror. Ali
looks at the back of his neck.
BIG MAN
You're a quiet one.
Ali picks up the scissors. His hand stops in the air
for a moment. Then he starts cutting.
BIG MAN (CONT'D)
I knew your father. He talked,
though.
The sound of scissors. The APPRENTICE (17) leans the
broom against the wall, takes a step towards the door.
Ali looks in the mirror. The apprentice stops. Picks
the broom back up.
BIG MAN (CONT'D)
Where were you on Thursday, Ali?
The scissors stop. On the radio the song ends; an
announcer says something, unintelligible.
Ali straightens the cloth at the back of the Big Man's
neck. Slowly. Carefully.
ALİ
Your shave's as good as done.
Ali puts down the scissors, picks up the razor. Strops
it. One. Two. Three.
The Big Man looks at the razor in the mirror. For the
first time, he looks away from Ali.
BIG MAN
...Fine. Just keep it short.
The sound of scissors starts again. The apprentice goes
on sweeping. A new folk song on the radio.
Margin notes — craft
- “wipes his scissors on his work apron. Once. Once more.” 1.4 Action line — It DOESN'T SAY "Ali was tense" — a small repeated action SHOWS the tension. Present tense, short sentence, visible behaviour.
- “He watches Ali in the mirror. Ali looks at the back of his neck.” 3.8 Intention — Two looks = two intentions. The Big Man wants to read; Ali wants not to be read. Not a single line yet, and the scene has long since begun.
- “You're a quiet one.” Glossary/Subtext — What's said: an observation. What's meant: "I'm going to make you talk." In dialogue, the real speaker is the line beneath the line.
- “The APPRENTICE (17) leans the broom against the wall, takes a step towards the door. Ali looks in the mirror. The apprentice stops.” 3.8 Intention/Obstacle — Even the third person has an intention (to get away) and an obstacle (Ali's look). Everyone in the scene is alive — nobody is scenery.
- “The scissors stop. On the radio the song ends; an announcer says something, unintelligible.” 1.2 Show, don't tell — We give the question's effect not through a description of a facial expression but through the SOUND being cut. The pause can be heard even on the page.
- “Ali puts down the scissors, picks up the razor. Strops it. One. Two. Three.” 4.1 Silent conflict — No line of threat; the answer is an object and a rhythm. Two wants (make him talk / keep him quiet) can't coexist — zero decibels, tension through the roof.
- “For the first time, he looks away from Ali.” 4.1 + 3.8 — The scene's turning point is a BEHAVIOUR: power changed hands. Who won, nobody said — everyone saw.
