The Condolence Visit (The Town's Rules)
This scene, from Senaryo Okulu's Workshop Film, was written to show the techniques you've learned.
Scene
INT. HOUSE OF MOURNING - DAY
The smell of cologne and halva. Cushions laid on the
floor. In the corner a samovar bubbles; nobody takes
their own tea, they wait.
Along the wall, plastic chairs, lined up from the
oldest to the youngest. The chair at the head is
empty — nobody sits in it.
CEMAL takes off his shoes at the door. Puts his hand
to his chest, bows his head to everyone in turn. Looks
at the empty chair. Doesn't go to it; perches at the
bottom end, next to the young men.
HEADMAN
That's the departed's place.
Sit down, Cemal, don't shame us.
Cemal doesn't sit.
CEMAL
Not at all. This is fine here.
A woman gets up to pour tea. The headman lifts his
hand slightly. The woman sits down.
Cemal's eye goes to the framed photograph on the wall.
He takes a folded sheet of paper out of his pocket,
holds it in his palm. Doesn't open it. Puts it back.
Margin notes — craft
- “The smell of cologne and halva.” 5.3 Sensory Signature — The world is built through the nose first. A single pair of smells brings the place and the mood without writing "this is a house of mourning."
- “lined up from the oldest to the youngest” 5.1 The world isn't scenery — The arrangement of the chairs isn't decoration; it's the town's hierarchy. The seating order draws the world's invisible law.
- “The chair at the head is empty — nobody sits in it.” 5.2 Rules — The unwritten rule, in a visible gap. The chair nobody sits in says "the departed's place" without forming the sentence.
- “That's the departed's place. Sit down, Cemal, don't shame us.” 5.2 Contract — This time the rule is spoken — and its sanction is a single word: "shame". The contract the town has signed with the audience is hidden in that word.
- “The headman lifts his hand slightly. The woman sits down.” 1.2 Show, don't tell — Who runs the room is visible in a single gesture. No need to say "the headman is a man whose word carries" — the tea will be poured once that hand comes down.
- “He takes a folded sheet of paper out of his pocket, holds it in his palm. Doesn't open it. Puts it back.” 4.3 Cost — The folded paper is the debt that can't be spoken of. Money isn't mentioned at a condolence visit — the world's rule; the cost waits in a paper that isn't opened.
